OSHA covers the private sector employees and employers in all 50 states through Federal OSHA or through any OSHA-approved program. State-run safety programs should be as effective as the Federal OSHA programs.

2.State & Local Government Workers: Workers and employees in state and local governments are not covered by the Federal OSHA but are protected by the OSH Act if they work in a state with an OSHA-approved program.

3.Federal Government Workers: Federal agencies should have a safety and health program that meets the same OSHA standards as the private agencies. Although Federal agencies are generally not fined by OSHA, it indeed monitors them and responds to worker complaints.

Here is a list of those who are not covered by OSHA:

1.Those who are self-employed.

2.The immediate family of farm employers who do not hire outsiders.

3.Those who are protected by any other Federal Agency.

OSHA 30 Hour Safety Training Topics for the General, Construction and Maritime Industry

The OSHA Outreach Training Program is provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration through classroom and online training. Also, a large number of OSHA certified private companies conduct OSHA 30 hour training courses. These courses focus on the health and safety training for those who are employed in the general, maritime and construction industry.

The 12 hours of mandatory topics in the 30 hour training courses include fall protection, falling object safety, caught in between safety and struck by safety. A brief introduction to OSHA is also provided to the applicants. Other mandatory topics required for training are lifesaving and personal protective equipments, ladder and stairway safety and other general health hazards.

The other elective topics for this course include prevention of fire hazards, safe handling of materials, confined space entries and tool safety. A minimum of 12 hours has been assigned for these topics. The optional topics basically include all those subjects that are specific to the work site. These topics can also expand and provide further details on some of the mandatory and elective topics. The minimum duration for these topics has been approved for 6 hours. The workers receive a training completion certificate at the end of the course.

Safety Training Courses Approved by OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA, has laid down certain guidelines for employers. The federal agency aims towards reducing work place injuries, deaths and illnesses by advising employers on how to create safety training programs for workers in potentially hazardous industries.

The OSHA training guidelines helps employers determine if workers require training, identify their training needs and goals. This also helps them develop learning activities and train workers. OSHA allows flexibility in training program types so that employers can create training programs that work well in specific workplaces.

As per OSHA, there are some states which have their own OSHA approved training programs. These states include Alaska, New York, Maryland, Arizona and California. The other states do not have specific approved training programs. However, all the states have an option of OSHA consultation on training programs. Training can range from classes on how to perform workplace tasks safely to signs with instructions on how to use workplace equipments properly.

The standards laid down by OSHA give enough training so that workers can perform their job activities in a safe manner. Workplace injuries and illnesses do occur but the OSHA approved training manages to reduce the number of occupational injuries and fatalities and help in making employers accountable for safety at the workplace.

The Different Types of Scaffolding Equipments Used in the Construction Industry

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has laid down certain regulations and guidelines for construction tolerances and safety equipments that are used in the construction industry. It has also laid down certain guidelines for the use of different scaffolds like scissor lifts, pole and suspended scaffolding.

Basically, a scaffold is defined by OSHA as an elevated structure that is temporarily used for supporting equipments and employees. This also includes structures that are used for support and anchoring points.

There are several different types of scaffolding that are used. A common type is the single pole scaffold that generally consists of platforms placed on bearers. These scaffolds are attached to one row of vertical supports on the inside as well as outside of the structure it is built against. A counter part of the single pole scaffold is the double pole scaffold. The only difference is that it is a free standing structure. It also uses vertical supports on all the sides. Another type of scaffolding is suspension scaffolding. This, as defined by OSHA, is a platform that is suspended from a height using a flexible support. This support can either be a rope or a cable.

All the different types of scaffolding equipments and their usage and maintenance is taught by any OSHA 30 hour construction training course.

Young Workers are more at Risk

Young people think that they are invulnerable to anything. They think accidents and injuries at work happen to other people and not to them. This attitude is exactly what makes young workers vulnerable to work place hazards.

As a matter of fact, young workers are twice as likely to be injured on a job as others. They are more at risk or prone to accidents in the first few weeks of their job. Since they are new, young and inexperienced, they are more likely to be injured during the first 4 weeks on the job. Moreover, young males are more likely to be involved in occupational accidents than young females.

There are a few main reasons why young workers are more likely to get into an accident. Their lack of: knowledge, skills, understanding the safety rules, procedures and rules, good judgment, impulse control and OSHA safety training.

Fatigue is another main issue with young workers. Many of them are new and they get tired from trying to balance work with their social life. Sometimes, they attend night schools and it becomes more hectic for them to keep a balance. This exhausts them and it doesn’t really help while they work.

Young workers cannot become experienced overnight. It is through observation and training that they will be able to gain knowledge and expertise. As an employer, it is your responsibility to provide OSHA training courses as this safety training will provide them with the necessary tips to reduce any hazard, react on time to any situation and learn the measures to avoid hazards.

Handling a Surprise OSHA Inspection

OSHA fines all those employers and companies that do not comply with its regulations and standards. Protecting your company’s finances and minimizing any legal liabilities should be your first priority. But how can you do this when OSHA tends to conduct surprise inspections every now and then? A good safety program, safety procedures and policies and even a safety manager will be able to minimize your potential for having safety violations.

Here are a few tips on how to handle a surprise inspection:

Start by first verifying the inspector’s credentials. Check for the name, title, phone number and business address and ask for any legitimate OSHA identification.

Once you know the inspector is legitimate, accompany him. Find out what the reason of the visit is before you start answering questions. Make sure that the managers in the company meet with the inspector and he should be accompanied by a Human Resources representative. Allow the inspector to walk around the company freely and at least one manager should be with him at any given time.

Assign someone to document the whole inspection process. Take photos, check for violations. If the reason for visit is serious, then contact the company’s lawyer. But remember to all the while be polite and cooperate with the inspector.

If there are any problem areas that you know of, limit the inspector’s access to those areas.

Never agree or argue with the inspector about any violations. Never give out any extra information.

Once the closing conference is done and the citation or penalty given out, review them with your legal counsel and safety managers and check whether your company should either comply or fight back.

Safety Training Course - Get Prepared For that Rainy Day

We cannot deny the fact that oil spill workers have played a major role with regards to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. At any particular point in time there were more than 42,500 personnel and more than 2,000 Federal employees who were directly involved in the cleanup operations across the four states.

Overall, BP's oil spill disaster had leaked nearly 180 million tons of oil into the Gulf. Moreover, nearly 5 million barrels of oil had spilled into the Gulf. The spill even caused a massive explosion that instantly killed 11 people. Since then, BP has ordered 32 machines to separate the oil and water. A Unified Command for the Deepwater BP Oil Spill even stated that nearly 9.9 million gallons had been burned and 28 million gallons of oily water had been recovered.

So if ever a spill on such a scale were to occur, would you be prepared? We all love to do our part, when it comes to saving the delicate ecosystems that are completely en-twirled and entangled in one and other.

Well, in order to prepare yourself for such a rainy day, you ought to enroll yourself in a recognized safety training course. Ever wondered what the difference was between the OSHA 10 Hour Course and the OSHA 30 Hour Course, apart from the hours? Do you ever wonder if these courses are related, and if yes, then what are the differences?

The OSHA 10 Hour course is as its name suggests, a 10 hour course that is designed by OSHA to instruct workers on how to recognize and prevent hazards at the workplace.

The main aim of any kind of OSHA training courses is to reduce the number of workplace injuries and illnesses that occur. The OSHA 10 Hour training courses are available for both – the general as well as the construction industry. Some of the topics include: fire protection, means of egress, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, and many similar topics. Those students who successfully complete the 10 hour course will receive a DOL 10 hour card.

Similar to the OSHA 10 Hour course, the OSHA 30 Hour Safety course is a 30 hour course that provides students with a more detailed look into the workplace hazards that exist and how to prevent injuries. It is specifically designed for managers, supervisors and superintendents. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive the DOL 30 hour card.

Some of the major differences between the 2 courses are:

The 30 hour course is more detailed.

The 10 hour course is designed for the worker.

The 30 hour course is designed for managers and supervisors.

Personal Protective Equipment - The Safety Helmet

When one talks about head protection, we instantly think about the safety helmet. But people are often unaware of the significance of the helmet. For this very reason, construction workers and employees ought to enroll themselves in the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course, in order to get a better understanding of the importance of PPE.

Firstly, this course is important, for it touches upon the areas in which the safety helmet ought to be worn. They are:

1.When there is a possibility that a person may be struck on the head by a falling object;
2.If a person is likely to strike his/her head against a fixed object; or
3.When there is a chance that an inadvertent head contact may be made with electrical hazards.

Here too, one must keep in mind that,'bump caps', the commonly used alternative of the safety helmet, does not always provide protection against any of the hazards, described above.

Fortunately, a wide range of accessories can be attached to the basic safety helmet, in order to make it suitable for variable working conditions. For example:

1.A retaining strap worn under the chin;
2.A cable clip and a bracket for the attachment of a lamp;
3.An eye shield, for welding;
4.A wide brim for additional shade;
5.Neck flaps for protection against weather;
6.A lining for cold conditions.

Here too, the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course, highlights the fact that, one must at all times ensure that the attachment systems and accessories do not reduce the safety and effectiveness of the helmet. Particular care should be taken when electrical hazards are present.

While choosing a particular type of safety helmet, the following points must be taken into consideration:

1.Location and nature of the work;
2.Extent of adjustment for comfort.;
3.Accessories must be compatible with the make of the safety helmet that is being used;

It is here thats the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Courses highlights a very significant point that, 'white helmets,' often provide better heat reflection, but most importantly, they can be easily seen in poor lighting conditions.

With regards to the cleaning and maintenance of the safety helmet, it is always advisable to clean them on a regular basis. Try using normal washing ingredients, such as soap and warm water. The use of very hot water, solvents or harsh abrasives can reduce the effectiveness of the Hard hat or the safety helmet.

For further details contact: http://www.osha30hoursafetycourse.com/

Learn the Hazards related to Site Excavation with OSHA 30 Hour Construction Training Courses

Working in trenches and excavations brings along a lot of risks and dangers. The most life threating of all the risks related to excavations are cave-ins. A cave-in is a situation wherein the walls of a trench collapse.

Cave-ins are considered really very deadly. This is because, the soil walls around the trench collapse without any warning. Thus, the worker, who is working inside the earth cavity, is left with almost no time for making an escape. The weight of the soil crushes down and twists the body. This might result in serious bodily injuries and, at times, even death. Excavations are dangerous irrespective of their depths. Thus, care must be taken for every one of the trenches that have been dug.

OSHA 30 Hour Construction courses teach the precautions that should be taken while working in an excavation. There are many reasons for walls collapsing in trenches. The walls are nothing more than undisturbed soil that is held in place due to various forces. In time, after digging, this soil succumbs to the earth's gravity and falls into the cavity. Cave-ins occur mostly where excavations are done in unstable soil, or soil that has been dug into before. Also, their chances increase when water gets collected in the trench.

The precautionary controls include pumping out water from the excavations and employing the use of protective systems as and how required. OSHA 30 Hour Construction stresses that proper surveys should be carried out before starting work on construction sites.

Workers at Greater Risk by not wearing Safety Equipment

In OSHA safety training programs, a lot of emphasis is given to providing workers with the knowledge about the importance of safety equipment. The fact is that a great deal of accidents happen when they are not wearing proper safety equipment.

A lot of organizations have workers that fail to wear the necessary safety equipment while at work. There are a number of reasons behind why they don't consider the need to wear safety equipment important. First of all, most of them are not aware of the dangers that are associated at the job site and how they can reduce it by wearing safety equipment. Another is that the equipment or clothing they wear is not comfortable most of the time, and sometimes it is very heavy, making the workers dread it as it makes their work more complicated. Again, some employers do not mandate them to wear the safety clothing, putting their lives at danger even more.

This happens in numerous occasions and the fatality increases when they don’t comply with PPE. One of the most challenging PPE categories is the eye protection. Three out of five workers who experience eye injuries are found to not wear any eye protection or wear the wrong eye protection at the time of the incident. 100% of work related eye injuries can be prevented if the workers were wearing the right eye protection.

The Solution:

In order to control this, what employers and employees must do:

Train employees on the importance of safety equipment.

Monitor employees

Buy only comfortable PPE

Develop incentive programs encouraging greater PPE compliance.

With these taken care of, the risk can be reduced to a great deal.

OSHA 30 Hour Courses & Workers' Rights

The introduction of the Workers' Rights topic in the OSHA 10 Hour and 30 Hour courses has been viewed upon as one of the most important topics that OSHA deals with. OSHA has observed that in the past many workers have not been able to voice concerns of their health and safety at the workplace due to fear of action being taken against them by their employers. In an effort to encourage workers' to speak up for their rights, OSHA has introduced this new topic into the OSHA safety training program courses.

This topic will very likely have a positive effect on thousands of workers who undergo the Outreach training programs every years. The topic stresses on the importance of workers' rights and creates awareness amongst the workers with regards to their right to:

A safe & healthy working environment.

Know about the various types hazards and hazardous chemicals that are prevalent at the workplace.

Learn about the possible injuries and illnesses at their workplace.

Undergo training

Request for a surprise OSHA inspection and to participate in this inspection.

Be free from any retaliation for exercising their rights.

For years on end, workers have been keeping quiet about the unsafe working conditions, and have not opened up about their insecurities at work because of the fear of losing their jobs. This new training however, will help to embolden the workers and encourage them to speak up about their current work practices and the hazards that are prevalent in their workplaces.

During the 10 and 30 hour trainings, the trainers will cover a wide range of topics on workers' rights and how to file a complaint. The trainings will also provide workers with samples of weekly fatality and injury figures and the Material Data Safety Sheet and a log of all the work related injuries.

The OSHA 30 Hour Outreach training is a program that seeks to spread awareness amongst the workers with regards to their rights and how they can identify and reduce job related hazards.

Construction Industry – The most dangerous place to work

The largest number of fatal injuries happen in the construction industry as compared to other industry groups in the United States. It is one of the most dangerous places to work in.

Construction employees undertake the most physically demanding work, put their bodies through great strain and are exposed to potential health risks and personal injury daily. New workers are especially at greater risk, as they have less experience and knowledge of their work rights. The riskier jobs are given more to them while the seniors are more into the managerial roles.

Types of accidents in the Construction Industry:

Construction accidents can include defective and collapsing scaffolds, electrocutions, cranes, electrical accidents, power tool accidents, falls from roofs and roofing structures, lift accidents, fires and explosions, burn injuries, toxic welding rod injuries, crane accidents, holes in flooring, chemical burns, injuries from faulty machinery and dumper crashes.

Health and Safety regulations:

It is a fact that the construction industry is very dangerous. But, steps are also being taken to curb the hazards and make the place safer for the workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration intends to protect workers’ health and safety through a set of regulations.

One main point that OSHA has always mandated is that the workers should be well trained thoroughly. The OSHA safety training is a training program which is designed for workers in the United States. The OSHA compliance training helps them understand all the hazards associated with the industries and the preventive measures to reduce or eliminate the hazards.

How you can Benefit from the OSHA 30 Hour Safety Course

Safety in the workplace has become an increasingly popular issue in the past few years. Accidents and fatalities at the work site can be minimized with the inclusion of certain safety rules and regulations. OSHA was started precisely to take charge of the safety and health issues of employees and to implement some semblance of safety in a working environment.

There are many types of hazards at a workplace and workers need to know about these hazards and how to prevent injuries from taking place. It is OSHA's responsibility to make sure that employers are following their guidelines by implementing safety rules and regulations at the workplace.

The OSHA 30 Hour Course is an informational module that is recommended for those working in the construction industry, mainly field supervisors, safety directors and foremen. These individuals are responsible for ensuring the safety of their workers. The OSHA 30 Hour Safety Training course guides the management on how to apply the OSHA standards in their daily work, in order to prevent injuries. Each of these courses are updated regularly. If you are unable to attend any of the classroom session, then there are online courses available for your convenience. This option is convenient for employers who cannot afford to send all their employees for training. The classroom setting on the other hand is interactive and allows applicants to follow each of the lessons by providing photos and graphics to keep them interested.

The benefits of the course is that workers can now get trained at their own pace. For the online course, workers can take up to 6 months to complete it. There are quizzes at the end of each module and a final test to complete the course. Students will learn more about OSHA and how potential hazards at the workplace can be prevented.

How to Keep Workers Safe During Oil Spill Clean Up Response

The oil spill workers and volunteers cleaning up the oil slick at the Gulf of Mexico will be facing a lot of hazards when they come in direct contact with the spilled oil. Although the hazards depend on the jobs that the workers are doing.

During the clean up, people involved in the process would have to work under the heat, work near the water and swamps, use boats or walk on slippery surfaces all the while with heavy equipment.

To protect the workers, the best thing is to train them on the hazards involved in the oil spill response and clean up operations. In case you are involved in the cleaning up operation, a minimum of four hours of training is required. Now a days, many safety training courses are providing HAZWOPER trainings, which is vital for the clean up operations. If you are interested, you can register with any of the OSHA safety training program and join the clean up process.

Workers who are involved at the oil spill clean up services are all covered by the standard of OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (1910.120 and 1926.65). Under this standard, workers will be provided with safety equipment and special training from skilled personnel.

The government of course has thought a lot about the protection of the workers while they are helping when the country needs them the most.

OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Course

If you are working in the General Industry, you should know that you have to complete the occupational safety and health orientation that is recommended by OSHA Standards. This is a vital training that you need to complete to stay safe and get the OSHA 30 hour certification.

Safety is the basic priority you have to keep when you are working in the general industry.
